hese paintings tend to depart from nature,
away from the textual look of naturalism. The brush stroke gives way to a mechanical
line describing the contour of an object. The brushed surface gives way to a 'cool', flat
surface. Figures are still used but very much reduced in detail. Form and color begins to
become the subject of the painting.
