What is File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?

File Transfer Protocol is a set of instructions that allow files to be transferred from one computer to another over the internet.

It is not the only method, but is one of the most common ones, next to email and HTTP.

Why would you need this?

An FTP application allows you to remotely upload or download files to or from your website from the convenience of your desktop or laptop.

While you could email the files to your host or ISP, it is much faster to use the FTP application because you get to view the updated website immediately upon transfer.

It also provides the user with more control of the website and reduces costs of maintenance.
